Ashwagandha in Ayurveda
Ashwagandha, also known as “Indian ginseng”, is one of the most important plants in Ayurvedic pharmacopoeia. It grows mainly in dry, sunny regions of India.
This robust plant, belonging to the Solanaceae family, can grow up to 1.5 meters in height. Its leaves are oval, and its small yellow flowers turn into orange-red berries.
In Ayurvedic medicine, it is mainly the ashwagandha root that is used for its medicinal properties. It is considered a “Rasayana”, i.e. a plant that promotes longevity, strengthening and regeneration of the body.
Ashwagandha, or Withania somnifera by its scientific name, acts to balance the doshas, the vital energies of the body according to Ayurveda.
More specifically, it balances the Vata and Kapha doshas. As a warming plant, it helps soothe Vata excesses (characterized by states of anxiety and restlessness) while energizing Kapha, infusing energy and vigor into people prone to fatigue and lethargy.
Benefits of Ashwagandha according to Ayurvedic medicine
Ashwagandha is recognized for its many virtues, and is one of the plants with so-called adaptogenic actions, i.e. it helps the body adapt better to situations of stress, whether physical or mental.
Here are its main benefits according to Ayurvedic medicine:
- Anti-stress: Ashwagandha is known for its soothing properties. It helps reduce stress, calm anxiety and improve emotional management, promoting emotional stability.
- Promotes sleep: Thanks to its relaxing properties, Withania somnifera helps combat insomnia and promotes restful sleep. It is recommended for improving sleep quality and reducing night-time awakenings.
- Revitalizing properties : Ashwagandha is a tonic plant, reputed to strengthen the body's natural defenses and contribute to deep revitalization. Indian ginseng is also highly appreciated for stimulating the libido.
- Concentration support: Ashwagandha is said to improve memory and concentration. It is therefore often used in periods of intellectual overwork or to combat mental fog.
